Yesterday, I had to drive down from my home to a shopping mall about 12 Kms away. The traffic was as usual with
a) many bikers and autos jumping signals
b) few vehicles, closely following an ambulance which was somehow trying to reach a patient to hospital fast enough.
c) and then there were drivers who were whizzing past swinging from one lane to another weaving their way to keep their vehicles somehow ahead of others
d) few who had stopped at the signal with looks and gestures of ridicule from other drivers for not being smart enough
e) and, traffic policemen at the signals were somehow trying to control the traffic
Once back in my study, my mind was reflecting on this short journey and suddenly started comparing driving behaviours with behaviours in team meetings
In team meetings
1. many start offering solutions even before understanding the problem or come to meetings with preconceived solutions (jumping signals)
2. some simply start following others’ thoughts (following the ambulance)
3. a few try to impress others with knowledge by ‘out-manoeuvring others’ (drivers who were whizzing past swinging from one lane to another)
4. few just keep quiet and are probably ridiculed (few who stopped at the signals)
5. the chairperson somehow trying to make sure that the agenda of the meeting is followed (traffic policemen)
What would happen if we respect other drivers on the road?
How would it be if we go to team meetings and listen to others respectfully before we offer our views?
PS: “How we choose to treat others with humility and respect, both individually and in groups, is a reflection of our character, ethics and our corporate culture”
