Early in my coaching career, I met Praveen*, a mid-level manager at a renowned IT firm in Bengaluru. For over a decade, Praveen had been one of the pillars of critical tech projects, respected by peers, trusted by leadership, and the go-to person when deadlines and crisis loomed. Yet, as the company evolved and automation swept through teams, Praveen felt uncertainty about the road ahead.
Recognizing the Crossroads
Praveen’s story mirrors an experience many Indian professionals face. After years of excelling in a specific niche, the winds of change be it layoffs, industry shifts, or simply the need for new purpose can push even the most accomplished individuals into discomfort zone. Praveen realised this during an internal reorganization. Roles were being redefined, and he was being asked to lead a cross-functional digital transformation project, far outside his comfort zone.
A Journey of Adaptation
Instead of viewing this as a setback, Praveen chose to see it as a chance to reinvent. Through several coaching sessions foussed on career strategy , we worked on a three-step plan:
Growth Mindset: Reframing the transition not as a loss, but an expansion an opportunity to learn from colleagues in marketing, analytics, and operations.
Skill Mapping: Identifying transferable strengths of people management, solution-driven thinking, stakeholder engagement.
Network Building: Proactively connecting across functions, seeking out mentors, and participating in firm-wide skill workshops.
With time, Praveen’s initial anxiety turned into excitement. He discovered hidden strengths in communication and built new relationships across the organization. That project he feared taking up became the stepping stone to a leadership role he had never imagined for himself.
The Indian Corporate Context
India’s rapid corporate evolution often demands this adaptability from its workforce. Stories abound of professionals like Piali Dasgupta, who moved from journalism into senior marketing roles, or Falguni Nayar, who shifted from banking to build Nykaa showing that successful pivots are possible regardless of one’s starting point.
But behind every successful transition lies courage and the willingness to chart a new course, invest in emerging skills, and reach out for support when needed. Coaching is the scaffold in this critical phase, providing objective feedback, accountability, and, above all, a safe space to explore both vulnerability and ambition.
Steps to Drive Your Own Reinvention
Pause and Reflect: Map your strengths beyond your job title. What unique values and abilities do you bring?
Embrace Learning: Raise your hand for new projects, attend workshops, and actively seek feedback.
Expand Horizons: Build your internal and external network. Diverse connections unlock new perspectives and possibilities.
Seek Support: Engage with mentors, coaches, or peer groups for guidance and honest conversations.
Reframe Setbacks: Treat disruptions not as dead ends, but as signals for growth or a directional nudge.
Your Next Step
Praveen’s story isn’t unique but the actions he took were deliberate. In India’s dynamic workplaces, reinvention isn’t a one-off event; it’s an ongoing process. Whether navigating organisational shifts, disruptions in the industry, or personal ups and downs, the ability to transform professional setbacks into new beginnings is the hallmark of future-ready leaders.
If reading this reminds you of your own crossroads, remember it’s never too late to steer your path in a new direction. Sometimes, the most rewarding chapters start when you choose reinvention on your own terms.
